Enduring The Island Sun For Carnival Cruise Lines

Well…ok. It wasn’t actually a test of endurance. We had a blast! We really enjoyed an opportunity to produce a piece that will be used at a Carnival Cruise Lines destination in the islands of Turks and Caicos.

Perper Design in Greensboro, NC contacted us in collaboration with Global Destinations, a trusted Carnival resource that provides destination planning and development. Together we are creating a production that will give a historical view of the Turks and Caicos islands and specifically the rise and fall of the salt industry that flourished their for almost 200 years. The video will be part of a tourist destination in construction on the island of Grand Turk for Carnival.

Shooting was a challenge to say the least. Most of it took place on the small remote island of Salt Cay. To give an idea of how small, there are 50 full time residents that live there. It was on Salt Cay where most of the salt production for all of Turks and Caicos took place for nearly 200 years starting around 1750. It is also where huge salinas were built to capture the ocean water to process out vast amounts of salt for export. At their peak, the Turk islands were responsible for supplying 75% of the world’s salt.

We flew into Providenciales and took a small plane to Grand Turk as our home base. From there, we took a skiff boat to Salt Cay with camera and audio gear in large coolers to keep it dry and protect it from corrosion. Everything was battery driven for the location interviews we conducted including a small 200 watt HMI powered by battery belt packs. We shot with the Panasonic SDX-900 and it performed beautifully. We’ll post the final production into our gallery later this year.

The weather finally cooperated after several attempts to get this shot. This is screen grab from some of the footage.
