Goodwill: Changed Lives

For as long as Goodwill Industries has been a part of our community and for as much good as they’ve done, they have largely gone misunderstood as to their mission. Seen as either a repository for the stuff we clean out of our attics or a chain of retail stores for lower income families, the majority of people don’t really know what Goodwill is all about. We have to admit: we didn’t until this project. Since it’s inception Goodwill has been assisting people who have barriers to employment with jobs and job training. The marketing department at Goodwill of Northwest North Carolina were looking to update their current corporate video with a production that would communicate this creatively and clearly to the viewer. And we hope you’ll agree that what we came up with fits the bill.

Built around three individuals’ “life change” stories, the production allows the viewer to experience the far reaching effects that Goodwill’s assistance has had on real people. Shot over 5 days in Winston-Salem, NC, we started with interviews of Sarah, Kenny and Christina. After editing their stories down, we wrote a script for the voice over and a shooting script for the balance of the shoot days. We used the Panasonic HPX-500 high-def camera with Zeiss 35mm lenses. The camera / lens combo yielded the filmic quality we were looking for and the P2 tapeless recording format gave an increased speed and efficiency of the production workflow that came as a nice surprise.

We would like to thank the fine folks at Goodwill of Northwest NC for allowing us to work with their team on this production. Though it wasn’t job training or placement we received, our involvement has had a life changing effect on us at DVM.
