Diiorio / DVM Team Up for Goodyear Racing Spot

Michael Diiorio of Diiorio.net (www.diiorio.net), a veteran local producer / director, contacted DVM to provide on-location shooting and post-production for a spot to launch Goodyear Racing Wet Tire Shine, a new product by Cyclo. Knowing that his client was looking for a high-end filmic look on a less-than-film budget, Michael was comfortable shooting HD with the Varicam having seen it’s beautiful images on other spots. Michael, Tim and Council performed some on-location test shooting using different frame rates and camera settings to dial in the look Mike was looking for.

The one-day shoot took place in two locations in Mooresville with Council Bradshaw shooting principle photography in DVCPRO-HD using the Varicam at 24 fps. Having shot some great HDV with our JVC GY-HD100U camera on previous projects, Council recommended we take it as a second camera to both get some extra coverage and to prove how well the two cameras can match up.

The first location was the home of the spokesperson for the spot, Tommy Baldwin, Crew Chief for Bill Davis Racing and former winner of the Daytona 500. The second location was PIT Instruction and Training, a primary facility for training pit crews for NASCAR where the race would be simulated.

The Varicam was mounted on a 32’ CamMate 2000 crane at the track which helped provide some great coverage and camera movement. While the crane operator, Josh Bumgartner, shot with the Varicam, Council was shooting handheld with the JVC. When we got into post we were pleasantly surprised to see how well the JVC footage matched the overall look of the Varicam. (Some slight color correction was necessary.) When we presented the JVC footage as an option to Diiorio, he loved it and so did the client. The two sets of footage looked great together and cut together seamlessly in our Final Cut Pro timeline. (The HDV footage was first batch exported as DVCPRO-HD.)
Here’s a look at the final :30 version.
